A year in a one-roomed cabin with my partner, tucked in under a canopy of big trees, looking out over the Byron hinterland. It was a daily delight of feeling sheltered and protected by the majestic gums, mango, avocado and pines; whilst peeking through to the distant views of pasture with horses and cattle.
There were flowering grevilleas and wattles in pinks, yellows and white in the foreground of the horizon's bold purple Border Ranges, the rising local Mt Chincogan, and the distant cousin Mt Wollumbin. I saw the landscape go from lush green to brown and back again as the rains came, forgot to come, and then finally showed up - much to everyone's relief.
The daily visits from a family of magpies or crows became my best friends, whilst swooping flocks of galahs, cockatoos, and eastern rosellas kept the neighbourhood interesting.
All of this became my daily contemplation from my tiny verandah studio. Wondering at, and loving, the close connection to nature that living on land brings.
This is the source of this series of work - Among Trees.
Melinda refers to herself as a contemplative artist, preferring the value of a slow, quiet and simple approach to inform and enrich her work. She uses thin washes of acrylic paint, often allowing the paint to move across the paper at its own pleasure. Her work offers a beauty, stillness and spaciousness; a place to surrender into and reflect upon, through quiet contemplation.
All works are on 290gsm paper, mixed media, 61x86cms.
This beautiful series of works are now available online through Bluethumb Art Gallery.

2019 | the green
mixed media minimal landscapes on paper
I love the green of an Australian landscape, always have. I know it is part of the reason I moved to the sub tropical zone of North Coast New South Wales 20 years ago, where I could surround myself with the green of sugarcane, trees, pasture and forests.
Perhaps it is synchronistic that I find myself placing this small series of work online as we are currently surrounded by bushfires. A reminder that Nature can regenerate after such devastation, and if we get some rain soon - hopefully quickly. (November 2019)
I have used thin washes of acrylic, with graphite or chalk detail, to depict minimal ethereal contemplative green landscapes, adding a red piece into the mix for complementary contrast.
All works are on professional artist 210gsm textured watercolour paper, unframed.
