In the latter part of 2022 I felt to brush up on my drawing skills. It had been a while. Joining a Plant Life Drawing class I found myself diving into the detail and enjoying the slowing down that drawing can bring to the mind and nervous system.
Over an eight week period, each week I took a random specimen that was provided in class and sat, looked, and really looked at the negative spaces and tonal values.
The grey pallete was created due to my late arriving at class finding all the other colours for plants ie greens were being used by my classmates. I made a spontaneous creative decision to go with grey, brown and red. I liked it so much I decided to continue with this theme.
One day I brought in a magnificent encrusted stem of hot pink bougainvillea flowers from a neighbour's garden, and just couldn't bring myself to draw it in grey, hence the pop of colour in this series. I plan to continue this series in 2023 as I have enjoyed the artistic creative and technical experience so much.
All works are on A4 216gsm professional art paper, unframed.
The colour pencils are from the beautiful Swiss made Caran d'Ache brand in the Luminance range.

2022 | dreaming in colour
|
After a two year spell from painting, I have found a return and renewal of play with the brush. The Dreaming in Colour series is an evolution of my work in abstraction, using an expressive movement of thin washes, whilst exploring the placement and impact of colour on the senses.
The paintings seem so simple I am often challenged to leave them as such. That being said, when I come to paint I place the critical mind to the side to allow a sense of intuition and openness to come forward in my awareness.
I let my hand and eye be drawn to whatever colour is 'beeping' me at the time, loading the brush and allowing the sweeping marks to form on the paper. It is then a matter of a 'zen like' repeating of this process until the moment arrives when a felt sense says, "Stop".
I put down the paint brush and review the painting. Sometimes the brush is picked up to make slight corrections of colour, but in general the piece is finished in an open and relaxed moment in time. The length of which I am not aware because I am so lost in the dreaming of colour.

2022 | embracing chaos - embracing change - embracing love
expressive abstract paintings on paper
Spending a day painting with some fellow artists recently, we began discussing our preferred approaches towards painting.
Someone remarked how she loves to create from chaos, and I said I loved to create from order. She challenged me to paint something from chaos. This is what came on the day.
I enjoyed the experience, colour and mark making. When I was painting this I was reflecting on the many paths that we take in the human experience, and how some seemingly lead into chaos or nowhere, yet we all end up at the same place. It was great to embrace the play of chaos, only to arrive at Love.
All works are on Canson 290gsm professional art paper, unframed.
More from this new series is now available online through Bluethumb Art Gallery.
